Association of Low Zinc Concentration and Hyperleptinemia with Overweight and Insulin Resistance in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Women
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Objective: It has been reported that low concentration of zinc in serum is associated with insulin resistance (IR), also appears to be a relationship between insulin and leptin. In this study the possibility of increased leptin concentration and zinc deficiency was evaluated; in the following, their relationship with overweight and IR was investigated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 104 PCOS involved cases and 99 healthy individuals as control were included. Blood specimens were collected from participants post overnight fasting period; zinc concentrations (spectrophotometry method), leptin (ELISA method), insulin (ECLIA method), lipid profiles and glucose were measured with enzymatic method. The homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index determined the IR level. Results: Zinc level was 87.20 ± 11.32 μg/dl in PCOS group, and 113.68 ± 8.31μg/dl in control group. Leptin concentration was 23.06 ± 3.33 ng/mL and 19.37 ± 3.34 ng/mL, and IR was 2.37 ± 0.83 and 1.45 ± 0.74 in case and control groups, respectively (all p<0.001). Zinc had marked negative correlation with leptin, insulin, and IR (p<0.001). According to the subject, which waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) parameters were confounding factors, hyperleptinemia and zinc decrement significantly affected PCOS subjects. In contrast, only zinc decrement had an association with PCOS, after eliminating the confounding factors (OR: 0.782, p<0.001). Conclusion: Zinc reduction is more effective on PCOS than hyperleptinemia. Hyperleptinemia has association with waist circumference and BMI; it can also affect PCOS.

Insulin resistance and adverse metabolic profile in overweight/obese and normal weight of young women with polycystic ovary syndrome
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOs) is an endocrine-metabolic disorder. This study intends to determine the comparison of insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic disturbance in overweight/obese and normal-weight of young women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods: Using a comparative cross-sectional study design in 2015, 27 normal weight (18<bmi Results: 112 women with PCOS participa...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of obesity and various phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) on the insulin sensitivity index (ISI) and insulin resistance (IR). METHODS ISI and IR from 273 women in four phenotypes of PCOS and control groups were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS The ISI and the percentage of IR were not significantly different among discrete phenotypes of PCOS gr...

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of six weeks of combined exercises with supplementation of cinnamon on glucose, insulin and fat mass in women with PCOS. Materials and Methods: 40 women with mean age of 24.15 ± 2.64 and BMI of 27.95 ± 1.28 were randomly assigned into 4 groups (exercise, exercise-supplement, supplement, control). Exercise-supplementation and exercise group...

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age characterized by the presence of polycystic ovaries, menstrual dysfunction and biochemical or clinical hyperandrogenism. Lifestyle modification is important in treatment of obese and overweight women with PCOS. This study was performed to evaluate the benefit of aerobic exercise training o...
full textInsulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with insulin resistance. There are also defects in pancreatic beta-cell function in affected women. These abnormalities are heritable. There are post-binding defects in insulin receptor signaling, with selective resistance to insulin's metabolic actions and constitutively activated mitogenic signaling in skeletal muscle. Intrinsic and environmental...
